Lot's of folk trippin over her cut. Hell sista's, myself included, have been doing this on and off for years. Talkin bout freedom? Wash, color whenever you want. I know I wore this cut a bunch of times before. My problem always started when I let it grow out. That in-between afro is a little hard to work with.
Let her be herself. That goes for LaLa, Rihanna, Cassie, and whoever else wants to do what they want to, with THEIR hair. These are grown-ass women!
I totally agree! I don't know what all the trippin' is about I personally love it, and it fits her elegantly shaped head and slim face perfectly.
ReplyDeleteYou are totally rocking that buzz cut in that pic too by the way. ;)
I had cut my hair down really low after my first batch of locks. Mine you, it didn't suit me at all, but it was still an exhilarating move! So to her I say go girl!
I second that motion friend. If it's hot out or the girl just wants a short look why be all extra about it? She is not her hair and this goes for all of us. It looks nice... Keep doing you Solange. I aint mad at ya. :)
ReplyDeleteRashida, I think it looks good on her also. And thank you for the compliment about my buzz cut. I would get fed up with my hair, (usually damaged) go in the bathroom with the clippers and a shaver and not come out until my hair was gone and lined up. You probably thought your short cut didn't suit you, but I betcha it did!
ReplyDeleteNaturigurl, I'm with you if you want to cut your hair, cut it. It'll grow back, usually faster than you want it to. I just hope she continues to hold her head up and be strong.
ReplyDeleteTrue, it does become a challenge when the afro grows out; it leans, bends, and goes flat in the back from the weight of the hair... been there done that. Anyway, I think I know who it is that's all upset about Solange's cut. Yes, I'm gonna say its "the brother of another color"! I would hate to think BROTHAS are trippin on this.
ReplyDeleteOh, by the way I'm less than 48hours away from getting my installation, of palm rolled locs.
Later
FLsungirl! Congratulations on getting your locs started!
ReplyDeleteGood morning Kumina, I just wanted to invite you to check out my blogsopt and see the day 1 pics. I'm so happy with my palm rolled locs. Hope to hear from you soon. By the way I have changed my blog name to "I'm finally locked up, and lovin it". Enjoy your weekend.
ReplyDeletei rocked the buzz cut for the first time when i was in 4th grade! loved it!! my grandma always rocked a low cut and i wanted to be like her. then i did it off and on till i was about 18. its a great hairstyle! but you're right, the growing out phase is the hard part.
ReplyDeleteLilly! You're lucky, I was getting an occasional press and curl in the 4th grade. My mom hated natural hair but my grandmother loved it. She would do my hair in braids and I learned how to braid from doing her hair.
ReplyDeleteTell me about it. I have grown and cut my hair more times than I can count.
ReplyDeleteBut I think the big deal is that we seldom see female celebrities without weave so it becomes a big deal when one not only wears her natural hair, but wears it short.
Mind you, I am not a relaxed or weave basher. To each her own, and we all do not have to make the same hair choices. I could care less what another woman chooses to do with her hair.
I am a celebrity watcher though, and I thought it was pretty bold of her to shear her locs and rock a TWA.
And oh yeah, you are SO RIGHT about the fro being a challenge once it starts growing and getting a bit of length to it. I rocked my TWA for a year or two before I started my locs, and it was a pain to try to do anything with it.
ReplyDeleteI even let a beautician put a texturizer in my hair, thinking that it would be more "manageable". All it did was make a mess of limp lifeless curls. I couldnt WAIT for it to grow out!
My original plan when I chopped my relaxer off for the last time was to let my natural unchemically altered hair grow, and I would have preferred to let it grow in a fro, but I quickly realized that I had no idea how to take care of it or style it. So locs were an easy choice.
Dredfoxx, I'm with you on the fro. I love the total freedom of what you can put on your hair as opposed to locs but the styling after a while gets sooooooo old. I did the texturizing too in 05 and regretted it as soon as I did it. But girl, your locs are an inspiration! And I'm so glad you share your stories and pictures on your blog.
ReplyDeleteDredfoxx, You're right, it took some cojones for Solange to do that cut, but I'm proud for her, especially because she is constantly in the shadow of her sister. It really made people take a closer look at her. You know down deep inside Beyonce wants to come out from under all that hair, but she'll never do it! HA!
