I was at the store today and this lady looked at my hair and said "Oh girl, I love your braids!" Who did your hair?" I said I did them over a year ago. Well, the year ago thing didn't even faze her. She then went on to say that she's going back to her micros and that she tried tree-braids but they didn't look good on her and she's going to an African because they can really braid hair and so on and so forth..... Now she had her hair in a low bun and it appeared to be permed and a little damaged so I can understand her wanting a protective style. But dang it..... these are locs! I went thru a hella year getting to this point and while I'm not knocking braids, cause Lord knows I wore them for a long time too, I couldn't get a word in to say that my hair is loced, dreaded, dreadlocked, matted, here for the long haul. Okay,I wet them the other day and braided them together and got them crinkled right now, so maybe that, plus the fact that they are not as thick as other loced heads I've seen here made her assume I just had a head full of mini-braids (?) maybe it was the lighting in the store.....oh well, the look on my face in this picture is, I'm sure, the look I had on my face when I was listening to this lady. Before I could even utter a sound, she spun off and threw over her shoulder, "Have a blessed day!" Wow, thanks lady. The initial comment was a compliment, but not a compliment, you know what I mean? Oh well.......I feel better now. All my 1 year and a little more loced people understand the emotion, right?
Ha ha.My first anniversary is in July and I also had a similar comment, I actually mentioned in in my last post.At least her first guess was right.I'm glad I found your blog!Looks interesting. This is the first post I read...Gotta go back and read some more :)
ReplyDeleteI'm going through the same thing with my husband. I think it's probably because people are not used to seeing small cultivated locs. Makes me wonder when I hit the year mark will he feel the same way, that they are braids.
ReplyDeleteYour locs are looking beautiful by the way and congrats on making it one year if I have not already said so.
Girl, I know what you mean. Most people think I have two strand twist. One asked me is that my hair and when I`am I going to take them down. I almost had a fit! I used a demi permanent color, along with your gray magic! (girl! That stuff made the color cover "ALL" of my GRAYS!!!!) Thank you, Kumina! Since I colored a few days ago, my locs actually look like locs, especially at the tips! Some people really do not have a clue!
ReplyDeleteThandi, early congratulations on your upcoming anniversary! I think people mean well, but it just doesn't come across that way. I'm sticking in there, no matter what my locs look like to anyone else! Ha!
ReplyDeleteThank you msfullroller, your locs are beautiful as well! Like you, I really think it is the size of the locs that make folk think differently. Sometimes I wish I had the thicker locs, but this is the way my hair loced and I thank God for it! I'm hoping your husband will take a really close look and see you've got locs!
ReplyDeleteNubian, I don't see how anyone can look at your locs and think two strand twists! Your hair has all the look of sho nuff locs. Take them down? WTH??? Folk, if they ain't in it, they don't understand, and sometimes you get tired of explaining. I'm so glad the gray magic worked for you, it makes such a difference compared to not using it. Someone in one of our groups mentioned it a long time ago, but I can't remember who, but I sure do thank them!
ReplyDeleteHave all your tips sealed off? I still have some loose ends.
i love that picture! LOL! its funny that you said you had the braids put in a year ago and it didn't even faze her! people are funny! believe it or not, some poeple still call my hair briads! honestly and truely, i don't even bother to correct them anymore!
